According to Webster’s Dictionary, “calligraphy” is “the art of beautiful, stylized, or elegant handwriting or lettering with pen or brush and ink. It involves the correct formation of characters, the ordering of the various parts, and the harmony of proportions.” For centuries we have felt the need to express ourselves through writing. The tradition began with the minute artistic renderings of illuminated manuscripts, and today many of us strive to keep alive the art of beautiful writing.
In this computer age, there is a growing appreciation for the time-honored tradition of hand-lettering, especially considering the creativity achieved by the free form of artisanal work.
As an artistic expression, the art of calligraphy has been transforming from the reproduction of medieval texts to very modern texts with a message. Do you have a favorite poem? A refrain you repeat constantly? a recipe you want to share with family and friends? A wedding? The announcement of the arrival of a new member of the family? A diploma? A certificate? A commemorative book marker? With artistic calligraphy, you can give a very original gift or add a touch of distinction to any event.
